Installers typically use a welded fitting or nipple to install the pig detector, containing a trigger mechanism into the pipeline. When the pig moves past the indicator, a signal is activated. 

Pig signal detectors can also provide information in the event that the pig is lost or stuck. The fact that the detector is installed at the end of a section of pipeline, makes it easy to detect the location of the pig.
